Fruit maturity studies in 'Galia 5' and 'Doral' melons. II. The effect of harvest maturity on the postharvest quality after simulated shipping.

The postharvest quality of Doral and Galia 5 melon fruits harvested at different maturities was evaluated after simulated sea-freight shipping. Galia 5 fruits were harvested from a commercial field at 3 maturities, viz. M1 (<10% yellow colour break), M2 (10-20% yellow colour break) and M3 (50-70% yellow colour break), and stored at 2 deg C for up to 26 days. M1 and M2 fruits showed no senescent breakdown (SB) during storage at 2 deg , but failed to develop sufficient colour to be acceptable in the market place. M3 Galia 5 developed unacceptable levels of SB. It was concluded that Galia 5 is not suitable for normal sea freight export from South Africa to Europe. Doral fruits harvested 31 days after anthesis (DAA) and 35 DAA were stored at 12 deg for up to 33 days. The first evidence of SB appeared after 21-25 days of storage. Fruits harvested 31 DAA were of acceptable internal quality, but fruits harvested 35 DAA showed unacceptable levels of SB after storage for 4 weeks at 12 deg .
