Packaging for fresh produce - a case study on table grapes.

Results of shelf life tests carried out on grapes [cultivar(s) unspecified] imported from Greece to the UK are tabulated. The berries were harvested, sorted, packed, precooled, stored at 0 deg C and transported from Greece to the UK within a week of being stored. A box of grapes was kept at ambient temperature for 6 days after arrival in the UK. Dehydration and berry shatter were the main causes of quality loss at this stage. Bruising, pathogen infection [unspecified] and SO2 injury occurred but at a lower frequency. In a further study, Thompson Seedless grapes imported from Chile which were packed in boxes with sulfur pads were inspected on the day of store delivery or at the end of the day (unsold produce). Berry shatter and SO2 injury were detected in >90% of the samples and dehydration was detected in 84% of the samples analysed.
