Effect of dim light during low temperature storage on the postharvest quality of radish sprouts.

Radish sprouts harvested in a commercial operation were kept for a day at an air temperature of 20 deg C in 0 (darkness) or 50 micro mol m-2 s-1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) (pre-storage treatment) then stored for 16 days at 5 deg in 0 or 5 micro mol m-2 s-1 PPFD (storage treatment). The purpose of the pre-storage treatment was to examine the effect of illumination during transport conditions. For treatments under light, white light was provided continuously (24 h/day) with cool white fluorescent lamps. The best quality was obtained in conditions where light was provided throughout the pre-storage and storage period. Dark storage caused shoot elongation and chlorophyll degradation. Light in low temperature storage was shown to contribute to maintaining high postharvest quality of the radish sprouts.
