The effects of postharvest treatments on vase life and quality of cut rose (cv. Mary de Vor) flowers were investigated. Flowers were either: (A) pretreated with 3 mM Al2(SO4)3 for 10 mins followed by immersion for 4 h in 3% sucrose solution. Stems were recut in air then placed in distilled water; (B) kept in tap water for 2 h, then stems were recut in water and placed in distilled water; or (C) kept in tap water for 2 h, then stems were recut in air and placed in 25% carbonated soft drink + 10 ppm NaOCl. These 3 treatments were also combined (A + B, A + C and A + B + C). Vase life and quality (size and FW) were promoted following treatment with C, A + C or A + B + C. Flowers treated with C (alone or in combination) developed less bent neck and produced less ethylene than other treatments. The most effective treatment for prolonging vase life and maintaining flower quality was C.
