Physical properties of sugar beet piles - Part 1.

Beet piles are mixtures of sugarbeet as the primary component with secondary components such as soil tare; hence they are characterized as heterogeneous or multiple-phase systems. Besides the physical and chemical properties of single beets the properties of beet piles affect the success of postharvest technology, storage and processing. Proper planning of postharvest operations requires knowledge of the physical properties of beet piles, their spatial distribution and their interrelationships (shown on graphs). This knowledge was a prerequisite for the development of a new system for measuring soil tare in beet piles.
