Data on the production of Asparagus in Greece are presented. Asparagus cultivation accounted for 7100 ha in 1995 and it is one of the most important vegetables produced in Greece for export. Most of crop is produced in the central part of Macedonia (Gianitsa), but cultivation has recently expanded into the eastern part of Macedonia (Chrisoupoli). At present, only white asparagus is cultivated for the fresh market. Most of the what is produced (30 300 t in 1995) is exported to Europe (mainly Germany). Planting, cultivars, cultural methods, harvesting, postharvest handling (including details of transport from Greece to Germany in refrigerated trucks), yields, profitability, export and production problems are discussed.
