A review is given of factors that influence cane quality and are susceptible to management control. The most important are non-homogeneous stands of cane, harvesting over-age cane, prolonged "kill-to-mill" intervals, and excessive extraneous matter. The rendement [recoverable sugar % cane] from heterogeneous cane can be 30% lower than from sound cane. Delaying the harvesting of mature cane loses about one third of a unit of rendement per month. The rate of loss of sugar during the postharvest interval depends strongly on temperature, averaging approx equal to 4% of the originally available sugar per day. From 0.125 to 0.25 units of rendement are lost per 1% of extraneous matter. Correct cultivar selection and fertilizer application are of fundamental importance, and are conducted reasonably well in most established industries.
