Results of a 4-year research programme, initiated in 1994 in the Netherlands to evaluate the feasibility of the cultivation of hemp (Cannabis sativa) as a raw material for the paper industry, are summarized. The results are split into 3 key areas based on an integrated chain model from farm to factory: primary production of hemp (availability and suitability of genetic material, cultural requirements and harvesting/postharvest treatment), pulp processing (preprocessing requirements, comparison of pulping processes for hemp, waste water treatment) and paper production. It is concluded that hemp pulp is very competitive with the traditional pulps when printing and writing paper application is taken into consideration.
