The occurrence of B. theobromae was evaluated in cotton seed (with and without lint) produced in the regions of Triangulo and the north of Minas Gerais State, Brazil, during 1990-91. The fungus was detected in 100% of the seed samples examined from the Triangulo region, irrespective of the presence or absence of lint. In the North region, B. theobromae was detected in 90.2% of samples with linted seeds and in 82% of samples with delinted seeds. The occurrence levels of the fungus in seed samples were generally <25%, which is the standard tolerance figure proposed in Brazil, and were lower in the north region than in Triangulo. Most of the seed samples showed growth of B. theobromae on individual seed covering >50% of its visible top surface. The occurrence of B. theobromae in seed samples during storage for 11 months declined greatly from the 4th month, reaching almost 0 from the 8th month on when stored under laboratory conditions. The occurrence of B. theobromae was preserved during 11 months
when seeds were stored in a cold and dry room. Evaluation carried out at the beginning and the 6th and 11th month of storage showed an increase in the seed germination rate which was higher under laboratory conditions.
