It is stated that following the implementation of the National Agricultural Policy of Malaysia in 1984, fruit production has increased tremendously. However, the constraint to fruit production, i.e. infestation by fruit flies (Tephritidae) remains unresolved. Current control practices include fruit wrapping, spraying with insecticides, trapping flies with protein baits laced with insecticides and annihilating males with chemical lures. Alternatives such as biological control, sterile male releases, preharvest quarantine system and postharvest disinfestation are being explored for incorporation as components of the integrated management (IPM) of the fruit flies. However, these entail further research, the cooperative effort of the farmers and commitment of the government.
