Qualitative indexes for melon harvesting.

Various qualitative indexes are suggested for different melon (Cucumis melo vars. reticulatus and cantalupensis) cultivars for determining the right stage for the harvesting of fruits in order to extend postharvest shelf life. For Pacio, Simphony and Soleado, skin colour was a good indicator of maturity, while for Harper and Simphony, flesh colour was equally effective. For Soleado, fruit firmness was also a good indicator of maturity. For all cultivars, refractometric dry residue (%), measured using a homogenized filtrate of the flesh from segments taken from opposite sides of a fruit, was a suitable indicator of harvest maturity.
