Postharvest conditions that lower the quality of cut flowers in Martinique and hamper market development were studied. Tropical and temperate species grown on the island and commonly sold as cut flowers are discussed. The roles of professional agents, producers and retailers were analysed. Different steps in the production and marketing of cut flowers to ensure the highest quality, particularly for exportation, are discussed. There is very little scientific data available on storage and shipping of tropical cut flowers. Research topics aimed at overcoming the main shortcomings could thus be encouraged. Operators involved in this subsector should be provided with solid solutions to assist them in making decisions as part of a strategy to promote the quality of cut flowers.
