C. maxima cv. Delica fruits grown at 3 sites in New Zealand (planted in November/December 1992) were subjected to maturity tests before and after 3 weeks of storage simulating refrigerated (12-14 deg C) transport, sensory evaluations and non-destructive firmness tests during maturation. Meteorological data for thermal time accumulation were collected from flower emergence to harvest and from fruit set to harvest. From the results it was concluded that heat accumulation during the transport period can contribute a significant increase in quality for fruits picked at a stage currently considered too early. It was also found that there is potential for differentiation between fruits using the KIWIFIRM tester pre- or postharvest, allowing growers to improve uniformity and quality.
