Monitoring field populations with pheromone trap and seasonal trend of adult body size of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae), in central Thailand.

Three traps baited with a sex pheromone lure were placed in a field of cruciferous vegetables in Pathum Thani, Bangkok, Thailand, to estimate the seasonal trend in population density of Plutella xylostella. A large number of adults were captured all year round regardless of distinctive differences in climatic conditions. A sharp decline in the population coincided with the harvest of vegetables and a population lag was evident for several weeks after harvest, indicating a low flight activity of adults in the proximity and/or narrow range of action of the pheromone lure. Populations remained high throughout the year and there were no clear differences in the number of adults captured in traps between seasons. The body size of males in Thailand was small and constant throughout the year as the temperature was always high with negligible seasonal changes. The body size coincided with that of males found only in mid-summer in Japan.
