The effects of plant growth regulators and mineral salts on the postharvest life of I. coccinia [I. coccinea] and V. rosea [Catharanthus roseus] (white) flowers were investigated. I. coccinia flowers were placed in solutions of kinetin (2 ppm) + sucrose (0.25%), cobalt nitrate (150 ppm) + sucrose, or calcium nitrate (120 ppm) + cobalt nitrate + sucrose. Mature buds of V. rosea (twig length of 12.5 cm) were placed in solutions of GA3 (2 ppm) + sucrose (2%), kinetin (2 ppm) + sucrose, or calcium nitrate (120 ppm) + cobalt nitrate (150 ppm) + sucrose. Treatments affected the fresh weight and protein and amino acids contents of flowers, and promoted vase life. Treatments containing plant growth regulators were more effective than those containing mineral salts.
