Postharvest shelf life of 'Piel de Sapo' melon stored at room temperature.

Melon cv. Piel de Sapo fruits were harvested in the Mossoro-Assu region of Brazil at commercial maturity (75 days after sowing), transported to the laboratory in corrugated cardboard boxes of 15-kg capacity, then stored at 25 deg C and 51% RH for 49 days. Sampling was done at 7-day intervals. Weight loss after 49 days was 5.8%. Titratable acidity decreased during storage, while pH increased. Soluble solids content remained stable during storage and the average value (8%) was the minimum required for export to Europe. Shelf life was limited to 28 days since fruits stored for longer periods exhibited severe symptoms of senescence, mainly breakdown.
