The cost of producing sugarcane in India has risen greatly in the past 3 years, the sugar contents of the abundant cultivars are not high, and growers are often guilty of malpractices: supplying cane with excessive binding material and trash; allowing harvested cane to go stale in the fields before delivery; detopping of standing cane well before its harvesting is convenient. Sugarcane cultivars CoS.88230, CoJ.64 and CoS.767, detopped or not in the fields on a particular date (28 March, 2 April, 6 April), were harvested 0, 1...5 weeks later and analysed for brix, pol, purity and estimated sugar recovery. Tabulated results show that while the recovery from intact cane increased for approx equal to 2 weeks before decreasing, that from detopped cane steadily declined from the start (except for an anomaly for CoJ.64 in the 2nd week). Costs of the extra sugar loss tended to be highest for CoS.767. It is concluded that the practice of detopping sugarcane before harvesting must cease; detopped cane sho
uld be delivered to a sugar factory only if the factory has given its permission, and the payment should be decided by the cane commissioner after the season.
