Potted plants of rose cultivars Royal and Sunset obtained from commercial growers in California (only cv. Royal) and Denmark were sprayed with 0.5 mM Argylene (a commercial formulation of silver thiosulfate) to run-off, or sealed in a tank containing 100 nl 1-methylcyclopropene/litre or air for 6 h. Both inhibitors retarded bud and leaf abscission, but had no effect on leaf yellowing, and it is concluded that ethylene is not the primary agent of leaf yellowing in miniature roses.
