Broccoli varieties.

Eleven varieties were tested in 1994 and 1995 as a summer crop. To assess suitability for once-over harvest, all heads in a plot were harvested on the same day. Each variety was harvested 3 times at 2- to 3-day intervals to compare early and late harvest with optimum harvest date. Packer, Excelsior and Kermit were the earliest in both years. Fiesta and Marathon gave the highest yields in 1994, mainly owing to high head weight, while the highest yields in 1995 were given by Senshi, Fiesta and Marathon. Postharvest keeping quality was tested by storing heads at 2 deg C for 14 days and thereafter at 12 deg C for a further 19 days (1994) or 7 days (1995). All the varieties were tested in 1995 but only 6 in 1994. The varieties kept well at the lower temperature but deteriorated rapidly at the higher. Nine varieties were also tested in both years as a late summer crop. In this case, Excelsior was the earliest variety in both years, while Samurai was the latest. Kermit gave the highest yield of marketa

ble heads in 1994. The percentage of marketable heads and yield were highest in 1995 for Kermit, Fiesta and Excelsior. Of 17 varieties tested at the seedling (cotyledon) stage for resistance to downy mildew (Peronospora parasitica), none proved completely resistant but Kermit, Senshi and Emerald City showed the highest resistance.
