Symptoms of this storage decay caused by Chalaropsis thielavioides are described and illustrated. Carrots are particularly susceptible when packaged in plastic containers and stored at inappropriately high temp. Losses of c. 50% are common. The pathogen is described with respect to its biology and geographical distribution. Preventive measures are outlined: these include controlled storage conditions (1 deg C and 95% RH), avoidance of preharvest plant stress, and postharvest dip treatments.
