The anti-laccase activity of pyrimethanil. Effect of the anti-Botrytis product on harvested grape.

In vineyards, when grapes are attacked by B. cinerea, wine quality is affected. Laccase, an enzyme which is found in infected grapes and which plays a part in the degradation process, is used as a marker to measure the extent of damage to the grape crop. A study of the effectiveness of different anti-Botrytis products on different grape varieties between 1991 and 1995 enabled an INRA team in Bordeaux to measure laccase levels. The measurements were significantly different according to the product used. Pyrimethanil stood out in terms of effectiveness. As a result, further tests were carried out in 1995 in others regions, on large plots. All the tests showed that pyrimethanil was more effective than all the other products tested in reducing the laccase level in the 6 varieties studied (Sauvignon, Muscadelle, Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Chenin and Pinot noir).
