The increasing losses in marketable yield of peaches, nectarines and percoche, particularly during the distribution phase, caused by Monilia rot in Italy in recent years are discussed. The species commonly causing damage are identified, post-harvest incidence of the disease is outlined and measures recommended for containing infection are described. The importance of good agronomic practices and climate in disease prevention are considered, and the roles of resistant cultivars and pre- and post-harvest chemical control measures in minimizing losses are discussed. It is concluded that chemical control alone does not give adequate protection, but an integrated approach throughout the crop production cycle is needed.
