A series of experiments on pulsing and impregnation of cut spikes of gladiolus was carried out in order to standardize the concentration and duration of sucrose pulsing and to assess the efficiency of impregnation treatments with AgNO3 and NiCl2. Pulsing with 20% sucrose for 16 h significantly improved floret opening, floret diameter, water uptake, longevity of the first floret and vase life, and decreased the weight loss of flower spikes in White Enchantress gladiolus. Impregnating cut cv. Dhanvantari spikes with AgNO3 at 1000 ppm for 10 minutes before pulsing with 20% sucrose for 16 h had the most beneficial effect on postharvest life and floret quality.
