The history of olive production in Japan is documented. Among the obstacles to olive cultivation, the greatest factor is the frequent outbreaks of damage from an olive-specific insect, whilst the next most important is typhoons. Culinary culture was also an obstacle to consumer acceptance in the past. Loss of olives due to spoilage has been reduced and quality improved. Fruit for table olives commands higher prices than that for olive oil. Future production is expected to be mainly of table olives.
