During 1986-94, in a postharvest survey, fluctuations in the incidence of Karnal bunt of wheat caused by Neovossia indica [Tilletia indica] were investigated. Disease incidence in samples was relatively high at 34.4, 24.7, 21.2 and 15.8% in wheat harvests of 1986, 1987, 1990 and 1991, respectively. Congenial temp. (max. 20.1, 24.6 deg C, min. 5.9-12.1 deg ) and RH of 81.2-96.3% with frequent rains at the crop anthesis stage, favoured high disease incidence. On susceptible varieties WL 711 and HD 2009 larger sori were produced and more teliospores were in the soil than with tolerant WL 1562, HD 2329 and WH 147. The severity of infection remained high in disease-prone areas. Replacement of susceptible varieties with tolerant WL 1562 HD 2285, HD 2329 and WH 147 decreased soil inoculum levels.
