Rapid method for evaluating the storage quality of tubers.

Three factors were found important in the storage quality of potato tubers: thickness of the suberin layer, rate of formation of scar tissue and resistance to pathogenic fungi. In a study of tuber lots of the variety Nevskii harvested manually and mechanically, tubers without mechanical damage and visible disease symptoms formed scar tissue more quickly and had thicker scar tissue and a thicker suberin layer than the rest. Resistance to Fusarium solani, F. culmorum, F. oxysporum, Alternaria radicina and A. solani was tested on discs by inoculation. The results of testing the 2 types of tuber with the rapid method were closely correlated with those obtained after 5 months' storage. Similar results were obtained using other varieties (Lasunak, Lugovskoi and Rezerv). It appeared that lab. analysis based on determining scar tissue, suberin and resistance to fungi could be successfully used for evaluating the storage quality of tuber lots.
