Effects of postharvest pretreatments and preservative solutions on vase life and flower quality of Asiatic hybrid lily.

To extend the vase life of cut Asiatic hybrid lily (Lilium x elegans [L. maculatum]) cultivars Corderia and Avignon, flowers were harvested at different stages and pre-treated with 1 mM silver thiosulfate (STS), 1 mM STS + 10% sucrose for 30 min, or 0.2 mM STS + 10% sucrose + 100 p.p.m. GA3 + 1 mM MnCl2 for 3 h. After these pretreatments, cut stems were held in various preservative solutions. Vase life, percentage flowering, flower diameter, petal length, fresh weight and solution uptake were measured. The best harvesting stage was when the first flower was fully open. Pretreatment with STS + sucrose or STS + sucrose + GA3 + Mn effectively prolonged vase life and increased flowering percentage. Preservative solution with 150 ppm hydroxyquinoline sulfate (HQS) + 2% sucrose + 50 ppm AgNO3 or 200 ppm hydroxyquinoline citrate (HQC) + 3% sucrose + 50 ppm GA3 extended vase life 1.8-fold compared with the control and improved quality, as judged by percentage flowering, FW and solution uptake. Buds long

er than 4.5 cm developed normally and opened in the above preservative solutions. Soda water increased vase life, but yellowing of the foliage started after 6-7 days. Use of preservative solution containing HQC + sucrose + GA3 after pretreatment with STS + sucrose + GA3 + MnCl2 kept the foliage green until the end of vase life.
