Use of water stress in forcing Kyoho grapevines to produce two crops per year.

The use of postharvest water stress to produce 2 crops of grapes annually was investigated using 3-year-old own-rooted Kyoho grapes (Vitis labruscana x V. vinifera). Plants were established in restricted rooting zone beds (rooting volume of approx equal to 30 litre/plant). Five weeks after harvesting the first crop, plants were subjected to water stress by cutting off irrigation for 0, 10 or 16 days. All treatments produced a second crop but water-stressed plants yielded more fruits than control plants. Severe water stress (16 days) induced early budbreak, enhanced flowering and increased fruiting (cluster size, fruit set and fruit growth). Mild water stress (10 days) was less effective. There was a tendency for apical dominance in budbreak and a growth potential gradient favouring upper shoots. Fruits from the 2 cycles did not differ significantly in their quality.
