The extent of total aflatoxin contamination of selected agriculture commodities in Malaysia, as shown by screening studies started in 1981, is discussed. Commodities screened were raw, shelled groundnuts and groundnut products, black and white pepper, spices, dried cocoa beans, copra, paddy and milled rice, milk, eggs and chicken liver. Results of screening studies during 1992-95 on raw, shelled groundnuts showed a slightly lower level of contamination than those reported during 1981-85. The 'Mengelembu' type, processed groundnut was free of aflatoxin contamination, while groundnut butter and satay sauce were contaminated. Pepper, spices, dried cocoa beans and copra were contaminated to some extent while paddy and rice were relatively free from aflatoxin contamination even though A. flavus was isolated from some samples. One sample of fresh milk was contaminated with aflatoxin M1 at 0.24 p.p.b. and some eggs and liver samples were also positive.
