Studies on Volvariella esculenta (Mass) Singer: cultivation on agricultural wastes and proximate composition of stored mushrooms.

V. esculenta cultures on PDA medium grew successfully at temperatures in the range of 20-40 deg C (the optimum was 35 deg ) and at a pH range of 3-10 (the optimum was 6.0). Various agricultural wastes proved satisfactory substrates for vegetative growth and fructification. Of these substrates, rice straw induced the widest mycelial extension while rice bran resulted in the highest mycelial density. Unfermented cotton waste compost resulted in the highest fruiting-body yield (89 g/kg substrate). Postharvest storage at 12 deg for one day preserved the texture and nutrient composition of fresh mushrooms but longer storage periods resulted in signs of spoilage (discoloration and stickiness) and greatly altered nutrient composition. The results are discussed in relation to the commercial cultivation of V. esculenta in Nigeria.
