Productive adaptation of onion (Allium cepa L.) landraces used for post-harvest storage.

Adaptation was evaluated in early (intermediate-day) and late (long-day) landraces. These showed potential for good postharvest storage. Ten trials were carried out during 4 years (1989-92), without irrigation, and S. Valenciana EELB (from Valcatorce INTA) was included as a control in 5 trials. Early landraces formed bulbs in October-November and time of harvest was in December. Some of these landraces had better yields than the control and other landrace groups used for storage. However, yield depression as a result of late sowing was high. Some of the landraces also had good postharvest storage quality, manifested by reduced losses due to rot. Late valenciane landraces had a bulb formation and harvest date similar to the control, and good postharvest storage for specific populations.
