Laser-based photoacoustic spectroscopy reveals dynamics of postharvest physiological processes.

CO2 and CO laser-based photothermal techniques are described which allow non-intrusive monitoring of minute changes in volatiles emitted by intact plant species. Numerous small molecules, such as ethylene, acetaldehyde, ethanol, ethane and water, can be measured at subnanolitre/litre level. The time response is a few seconds in flow-through systems. Measurement of ethylene evolution from wounded tomatoes and ethanol and acetaldehyde concentrations in pears stored under aerobic and anoxic conditions is described.
