N. mangiferae is the causal agent of several mango diseases in South Africa. These diseases include blossom blight, and the postharvest diseases, soft brown rot and stem-end rot. It is thought that N. mangiferae infects the inflorescence at an early stage during flowering. After infection, it spreads systemically through the inflorescence into the fruit where it remains latent until the onset of ripening. Control measures against N. mangiferae were investigated. Commercially, blossom blight is currently effectively controlled by sprays of the systemic fungicides flusilazole or pyrazophos. The use of other pre-harvest chemicals was investigated for effectiveness in postharvest control of soft brown rot and stem-end rot. Of the fungicides tested, monthly pre-harvest applications of copper oxychloride during the period from fruit set until harvest resulted in significantly improved disease control.
