Hass avocado fruits were harvested in the first half of November in Quillota, Aconcagua valley, Chile and stored at 6 deg C and 90% RH for 35 days under the following controlled atmosphere (CA) storage conditions: 5% CO2 + 2% O2, 5% CO2 + 5% O2, 10% CO2 + 5% O2 and 0.03% CO2 + 21% O2 (control). After 35 days, control fruits exhibited 0.45 kg-force firmness while fruits from all the CA treatments had a firmness of around 12.5 kg-force. After 50 days (35 days under CA and 15 days at 6 deg in air), fruits from all CA treatments had a pulp firmness of around 9.8 kg-force. The incidence of physiological disorders and fungal infection was lower in CA-stored fruits than in air-stored fruits. The results indicate that long distance sea transport of Hass avocado fruits is feasible in refrigerated CA containers. The best CA storage combination for Hass avocado fruits was 5% CO2 + 2% O2.
