Supply water in hydroponic systems including NFT (nutrient film technique) may introduce diseases such as Pythium, Fusarium and Phytophthora in crops, and treatment with 1,bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (BCDMH) (as Nylate) is discussed. BCDMH controlled phytotoxicity and removed algae from pipes. Postharvest control of Erwinia, Rhizopus and Botrytis on tomatoes, Capsicum annuum and cucumbers by BCMDH is discussed, and residue data is presented. Using BCDMH to control Legionella infection of humans, caused by mist propagation, is also considered. Diagrams for manual BCDMH dosing, and dosing by redox control in poultry sheds, hydroponic systems, seedling propagation and misting systems are provided.
