Post-harvest loss in cane weight and formation of mollasogenic [melassigenic] sugars in sugarcane on staling during hot weather month.

Postharvest deterioration of different sugarcane cultivars (CoJ 64, CoP 211, CoJ 79, CoS 767 and CoLK 8102) was studied in relation to the duration (1-96 h) and mean temperature (32.9-33.9 deg C) of storage during May 1995 at the Sugarcane Research Station, Jalandhar, India. Regression coefficients were determined for cane weight loss, non-sucrose formation and reducing sugar formation; results are tabulated and discussed. The most stable cultivar was CoP 211, with CoLK 8102 the next best.
