Research in Latin America is summarized to facilitate further research, and especially development, in the region. Taxonomy, biogeography, ecological requirements, nursery management, field establishment, harvest techniques and postharvest handling are reasonably well defined. Topics identified as requiring further research are: seed technology, vegetative propagation techniques, plantation establishment (especially density, geometry, intercropping and agroforestry designs) and management (fertilizer application, ground cover and weed, pest and disease control), processing and cost of production. Market potential of araza has not been fully exploited and it is suggested that work is required in market creation. The araza is highly productive (annual yields of 23 t/ha) with adequate management on poor soils, with a high product/waste ratio (63-85%), an attractive flavour and appearance, and great processing potential.
