Ripening and disease control during evaporative cooling storage of tomatoes.

The effect of ventilating an evaporative cooler (EC) and of pre-storage ethanol application or washing in NaOCl in reducing ripening and disease infection in stored tomatoes (cv. Improved Pope) was investigated. Tomato fruits harvested mature-green and stored in an EC had much less weight loss and shrivelling and a longer storage life than fruits kept at ambient conditions. Fruit ripening was significantly delayed by providing the EC with vents or by treatment with ethanol vapour. Disease (symptoms similar to those of the soft rot pathogen Erwinia carotovora) incidence was reduced considerably by pre-storage washing in 0.5-1.0% NaOCl. The quality of the ripe fruits was not affected by the different treatments.
