Numerous opportunities exist to improve the longevity and quality of flowering potted plants for consumers. Scientific efforts have demonstrated the importance of plant genetics and production practices in maximizing longevity of such plants. As the majority of research has been conducted on only 2 or 3 of the most economically important crops and no physiological link has been made to predict the longevity of flowering potted plants, it is suggested that it is necessary to investigate the effects of production practices on longevity on a crop-by-crop basis. Genetic manipulation of plant senescence will have a major role in improving the longevity of flowering potted plants.
