A review of results from experiments carried out in Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA demonstrates that increasing amounts of preharvest chilling, rainfall and sunshine together with advancing fruit maturity at harvest do contribute to the reduction of scald susceptibility in Delicious apples under commercial conditions while late-season high temperatures increase their susceptibility. However, a high degree of correlation among these variables makes it difficult to quantify their individual effects. Variation among geographical locations and between years in the relationship between these variables and scald further complicate the picture.
