To investigate the potential of non-bagged production of pear fruits, postharvest changes in the quality of pears cv. Niitaka [Pyrus pyrifolia], grown with or without bagging, were studied during storage for 5 months at 0 deg C. Soluble solids content of non-bagged fruits was higher than that of bagged fruits at harvest. This trend was maintained during storage. Juice extracted from bagged fruits had a higher pH than that from non-bagged fruits. No difference in firmness between bagged and non-bagged fruits was found at harvest. Firmness of non-bagged fruits remained stable during storage but that of bagged fruits decreased gradually. At harvest, non-bagged fruits had higher fructose and glucose contents than bagged fruits, but there was no significant difference in sucrose content between the 2 treatments. Electrolyte leakage from fruit flesh produced without bagging was lower than that with bagging. There was no significant difference in electrolyte leakage up to 1 month after harvest, but bag
ged fruits exhibited more electrolyte leakage than non-bagged fruits after 3 months of storage.
