The selection of an early maturing cultivar, called MontCap, has been achieved in Montauban, France, among the progeny of open pollinated Hayward seedlings. The fruit size is about 100 g and the shape something between that of Hayward and Bruno. Maturity is one month ahead of Hayward. Postharvest behaviour is similar to Hayward's as it requires some cold storage (minimum one week) in order to achieve proper maturity. In this respect this cultivar differs from the early maturing species Actinidia arguta, A. setosa and A. chinensis, which soften normally on the vine. Unlike Hayward, MontCap has a short storage life as soon as softening has started. Therefore, the market for this cultivar is limited to the beginning of the season during the period when no Hayward of a reasonable quality is available. This work confirms the very special shipping and storage ability of Hayward. It was also concluded that Brix level and softening on the vine are less suitable selection criteria for new cultivars than
postharvest firmness.
