In 1995, the production of mangoes in Indonesia reached 888 960 tonnes and they were the 4th most important fruit exported. Transportation of mangoes from Surabaya (East Java) to destination countries commonly uses air flight, that from Cirebon (West Java) uses ships. The main problems faced by mango exporters in Indonesia are high transportation costs by air and very short storage life of the fruits after transportation by ship. Export by ship is the best alternative, but cooling facilities in the vehicle, shipping container, and storage must be available. Harvesting, handling and packing procedures to ensure fruits reach their market destination in the best shape are discussed.
