The effects of different rates of N applied at different times on the yield, fruit quality and mineral partitioning in the apple cultivars Fuji and Redspur Delicious were investigated over the period 1992-94 in trials conducted by the University of Idaho, USA. Fruits of both cultivars were smaller, firmer and had more colour with low rates of N than those from trees supplied with higher rates of N. Fruit of Redspur Delicious from trees with high N rates had higher respiration and ethylene evolution rates. Nitrate contamination of the soil appeared to reach harmful levels when rates of N exceeded 453.6 g/tree.
