Alternariosis of the fruits of Actinidia chinensis.

Alternaria alternata is a common microorganism found on the surface of the leaves, blossoms and fruits of A. chinensis. It is also often isolated from rotted fruits after storage. This species seems to behave as a parasite causing serious damage to various crops. These considerations have led us to study the pathogenicity of this pathogen on kiwifruit stored for 4 months at 0-3 deg C. Fruits of the cultivars Abbott, Bruno, Hayward and Monty were used. The inoculation was carried out by introducing mycelial discs under the epidermis on the stem end or on the equatorial zone and mycelial masses in the endocarp of the fruits. Other fruits with or without wounds were immersed into a spore suspension of the fungus. Fruits wounded and immersed into the spore suspension were completely rotted. A serious rot was observed on the fruits inoculated with mycelium discs under the epidermis in the stem end area. The cultivar Monty showed the highest susceptibility. According to these results, it seems that A.

alternata can cause serious rots to the stored fruits of A. chinensis.
