A comparison of the responses of aphids and thrips to controlled atmospheres.

A discussion is presented of 10 years of controlled atmosphere (CA) disinfestation research at the Levin Research Centre, New Zealand, using published and unpublished data to demonstrate key features of the effects of CA on a variety of insect taxa that infest temperature crops, including Thripidae, Aphididae and others. Sub-lethal effects, effects of temperature, carbon dioxide level, interaction of oxygen and carbon dioxide and experimental design are considered. It is concluded that: absence of oxygen enhances insecticidal activity; carbon dioxide/nitrogen atmospheres are more insecticidal than carbon dioxide/air atmospheres; time and temperature over-ride controlled atmosphere effects; and there is little improvement in insecticidal efficiency with increasing carbon dioxide at a point somewhere between 40 and 60% carbon dioxide.
