Blackheart (BH) is one of the physiological disorders causing substantial losses during storage of pineapple fruits. In fruits (cultivars Smooth Cayenne and Yellow Mauritius), harvested during the summer in China, BH symptoms appeared after 1 or 2 weeks of storage at 5, 7 and 12 deg C. Their incidence and severity increased with storage duration and were more serious at 12 than at 5 or 7 deg . Treatment with GA3 (150 or 300 ppm) induced BH in fruits stored at ambient temperature for 1 or 2 weeks (control fruits had no BH symptoms). In the winter, the incidence of BH in fruits harvested from November to March was 30-40% or more. Incidence and severity were greater when fruits were treated with GA3. The development of BH was accelerated by storage at 12 deg and inhibited at 7 deg . Fungicides (Imazalil, TBZ [thiabendazole], Benlate [benomyl]) failed to control pineapple BH. Heating at 40 deg for 24 h before storage could reduce the incidence and delay the occurrence of BH. Waxing with SF-wax (part
icularly quarter-strength SF-wax) significantly reduced the severity of BH in fruits stored at 12 deg .
