Performance of own-rooted peach grown in Taiwan highland area by different density and pruning system.

Early peach cultivars Sunako Wase, Nagano Wase and MF-628 were propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings at the Experimental Highland Farm, Mei-feng, Taiwan, in July 1991. Young trees were planted in January 1992 in an experimental orchard fitted with a rain shelter in rows 300 cm apart at 25, 50, 75, 100 or 125 cm. Flowering and fruiting first occurred in 1993, while significant yield stability was observed from 1994 to 1996. The productivity and yield efficiency of a super-high-density, own-rooted peach orchard with postharvest meadow heading or year-round selective thinning were evaluated. The greatest yield was obtained with 3 x 1 m density and year-round selective thinning. Sunako Wase showed a higher mean yield potential (21.1 t/ha) than Nagano Wase (17.6 t/ha) and MF-628 (12.7 t/ha).
