บทคัดย่อ

This booklet presents a technological, social and economic overview of the cotton crop in Mato Grosso, Brazil, in 1996, and identifies the problems which hinder its establishment. The survey was carried out by means of a questionnaires sent to institutions and properties in 13 cotton-producing municipalities. It is concluded that the cotton crop went through an evolution in the technological, financial and social aspects, changing from a small producer crop to an economic alternative for medium and large producers. There is a need for technological improvement in the areas of pest and disease control, fertilizers, better suited cultivars and postharvest techniques. There is a need for diffusion of, and training in integrated pest management techniques. It is recommended that the power of cotton producers increase to balance the influence of middlemen. The participation of cooperatives and cotton producing companies in the buying system, technical assistance and financing of production must be st

imulated. There are prospects for increasing the growing area in the Cerrado, at medium and large producer level, and of reduction in area in the traditional growing areas.
