Maize samples collected from fields, farm storage, middlemen storage and food shops in Vietnam during May 1995-August 1996 were analysed for aflatoxin B1. Toxin production by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus strains isolated from maize in northern Vietnam was also studied. The highest mean level of aflatoxin B1 was 130 p.p.b. in maize kernels of Thanh Hoa-Nghe An province. One of 10 ear samples from Ha Tay and 2 of 10 of those from Thanh Hoa were contaminated at the level of 20 p.p.b. and 60 p.p.b. of aflatoxin, respectively. No aflatoxin was detected in maize-based products. 6 of the 7 Aspergillus strains tested produced aflatoxin B1. 20 samples of maize kernels from provinces Ha Tay, Thanh Hoa, Son la in the north of Vietnam were collected for ochratoxin A analysis. Only 1 of the 20 samples was contaminated with ochratoxin A, at the level of 90 p.p.b.
